Live Life Out Loud

Live LifeOut LoudThis spread was inspired by some old music paper I found in an art magazine I bought years ago and never knew how to use before, fortunately I didn’t throw it away as I always knew it would be useful one day :-).

I did some layers for the background with acrylic paints and gesso and collaged torn pieces of the music score, some musical instruments I found in some vintage adverts on the internet and the laughing man, from an old advert for a comic act (I think).  I also used a Tim Holtz mini mask and I printed the heading on my computer.  I’m pretty happy with the finished spread, I like the light and dark effect.

I’m not sure I do live my life out loud though, generally I don’t like being the centre of attention I’m more the kind of person who just gets on and does things in the background.  Today though I did two things that did put me ‘in the spot-light’ (as it were) and whereas I would normally have been awkward and self-conscious today I felt confident and relaxed,  lots of people smiled at me and that made me feel good.

Note to self…

There is something in my life – a trivial matter but it causes me some anxiety and, even though I know it really is unimportant it still plays on my mind and I spend far to much time mulling it over.  It is almost becoming an obsession.  I know because I keep thinking about it in a negative way I now see the problem far worse that it actually is.  This is my note to myself that I just need to breathe and let go – concentrate on what I do that is good and worthwhile and stop stressing about things that don’t really matter.

Breathe

Let GoThat’s good advice if only I would listen to myself and actually do it 🙂

There are lots of layers on this spread.  Most of the images are from ‘free to use’ stuff from the web and the more I look at it the more I can see the significance of how all the images came together:  the time piece and the two ladies because ‘the problem’ is historic, the two funny heads that can be one thing or another (two faced), the squawking crows; the word Snappy in the background, the pointing finger and the big scissors because I just need to cut myself off from that part of my life.  The white bit in the centre of the first page is a metallic white paint I bought, it gives a nice glow and I’m telling myself it signifies the light at the end of the tunnel.

On the other hand I could just be reading far too much into a collection of random images I made and then gave a title to.

We’ll probably never know 🙂

Big love

AJ

It’s all about attitude

I TRY to keep a positive attitude, I’m not always successful, but I know I have to keep trying, because nothing good comes from negativity.

I am really enjoying being creative again and playing around, trying to find out what works best for me, I’ve got several projects on the go at the moment.  I am loving working in books/journals because they can be both private and public.  I was wondering whether I should rename my blog ‘AJs Play Book’, because I’m not sure that anything I do could really be described as art and I haven’t written any personal journalling yet (I probably never will, that’s just not my style).  I don’t think it really matters though because as far as I can tell there are no rules to art journaling and that sounds good to me 🙂

Big love

Free as a Fish!

There is something about fish that I really like, I love visiting aquariums and I’ll even walk into a pet shop just to have a look in the fish tanks with no intention of buying any.

Once I learnt to SCUBA dive just so I could dive on a reef just off Tobago.  It was fantastic, but not something I’ll ever do again.  I loved what I saw but there was something freaky about being so far under water.

Here is my art journal tribute to fish and the wonderful environment they live in.  I know the Octopus image came from The Graphics Fairy, maybe the shells too, but I can’t remember where the fish and the lady came from.  When I first started to collect images I thought they were just for my personal and private use, but now that I have decided to put my art journal pages online in future I will attempt to record and acknowledge my sources more accurately.

The secret of life…

I’ve used this spread as the header for my blog because these were the first pages that I was realy happy with. They have lots of layers because I kept doing things that I didn’t like, then I would paint over them, or try to remove the hideous layers (with a baby wipe). This is what Paula (aka Journal Artista) calls ‘Working through the Uglies’. If I hadn’t heard her say that on her Ustream channel I think I’d have given up. But I persevered and I’m happy that I did, I like these pages 🙂

I also like the words on these two pages – the secret of life is to enjoy the passing of time. It’s very true, from the moment we are born we just keep getting older. When you are young time stretches before you like infnity but as you get older it really speeds up and you realise that you have to enjoy each moment as much as you can. When I was young I thought that being the age I am now (mid 50s) would be awful, but the truth is it’s really fine, I’m OK with it, I’m content.

The very first layer on these journal pages, which probably only I can see now, are some shop receipts from a local shop from the 1920s. As well as trying to be creative I also have a passion for local history and heritage which you can check out (if you are the slightest bit interested) at this website: www.rshg.org.uk. One day I intend to almalgamate these two interests and produce a Heritage Art Journal.

I’d like to thank the many, many people who put online ‘Free to Use’ collage sheets and images, people like The Graphics Fairy, Vintage Moth and many more too numerous to mention (and because I forgot to make a note of the names when I downloaded the images – sorry!). Every single one of you is so generous and so inspiring. Thanks!

Big love
AJ 🙂

It’s a new beginning

Hello!  I’m AJ and this blog is about my adventure into art journaling.  I’ve always loved looking at ways of being creative and discovering art journaling earlier this year has been a wonderful and inspiring experience for me.

Its A New Beginning

I was first inspired to start art journaling when I watched the YouTube videos of Teesha Moore earlier this year.

A few years ago I attended a Lomographic Society World Congress in London, I was on my own and a little nervous but on the first day I was fortunate to meet up with Teesha’s husband, Tracy, and their daughter Trista.  Tracy and Trista looked after me and we became friends. As well as lots of cameras Tracy carried about with him a beautiful hand made journal which he encouraged everyone he met to draw or write in. I knew that Tracy and his family were all very creative and artistic people but I didn’t understand about art journaling until I discovered Teesha’s video turorials about art journaling. I was blown away by her work and inspired to have a go myself.   Teesha creates wonderful, vibrant and fantastical journal pages as you will see if your visit her website

Since then as well as experimenting and trying to find my own style for art journaling I have searched the internet for inspiration, ideas and more tutorials.

Paula Phillips aka Journal Artista has been hugely inspirational.  Paula is so generous with her time, sharing her ideas and encouraging newbies like me. She has a Ustream channel and records programmes every week about her art and creativity. She is an absolute treasure so please check her out. Right now Paula has a little competition going on on her blog, you are supposed to use a stencil to enter, but I haven’t got any, in the image on my header I did use a masking tecnnique with Post-it notes that Paula demonstrated, I wonder if that counts?

The image above is the first page of one of my first journals and is called appropriately It’s A New Beginning. It was a start and I’m hoping that things will improve as time goes on. 🙂
